In what the chairman of the Inland Revenue, Sir Nicholas Montague, described as a “milestone” for the provision of e-government services, it was announced this week that over one million taxpayers filed self-assessment tax returns online this year.
“I am delighted that so many people have chosen to file their tax return electronically,” commented Sir Nicholas. “Filing electronically offers many benefits, such as immediate calculation, faster repayments and the certainty that your tax return has been received by the deadline. More and more people now want to use this groundbreaking service."
According to Revenue statistics, by midnight on January 31, exactly 1,079,298 returns had been lodged electronically. The current system gives taxpayers the choice of using the Revenue’s own electronic tax return form, or one provided by a private software supplier.
