UK Lawyers Support Back Office Outsourcing Trend

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

17 October 2003

According to the results of the recently released Legal Week/EJ Legal Big Question survey, 69% of UK lawyers polled are in favour of outsourcing some back office functions to developing countries.

The survey found that in addition to this, some 26% of firms are already in discussion over the possibility of outsourcing some support functions overseas, with India emerging as the favoured location.

41% of the 100 lawyers questioned also expressed support for the possible outsourcing of legal services, although this proposal was less enthusiastically advocated.

Speaking to Legal Week following the release of the survey, Tarlos Lyons corporate partner, Kevin Barrow explained that:

"We advise a lot of big companies on their own outsourcing and it is an economic inevitability that law firms will go down this route."

However, he continued:

"The idea of offering legal advice from low cost offshore centres is less popular, in my opinion, simply because there is software that is already on the market that makes providing early stage advice even cheaper than giving it from the developing world."
