UK Lawyers Predict Surge In Shareholder Litigation

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

21 July 2004

Questioned as part of the most recent Legal Week/ECJ Legal Big Question survey, more than three-quarters of the leading UK business lawyers polled stated that they expected to see an increase in US-style shareholder litigation over the coming years.

According to Legal Week, some 63% of those questioned thought that the frequency of such actions will "increase a little" over the next five years, whilst 12% revealed that they are expecting a major jump.

55% suggested that they agreed with leading US litigation lawyer, Melvyn Weiss that class action suits are a pillar of good corporate governance, but 67% expressed the belief that there would be negative consequences for the UK's business community if such an "antagonistic" attitude were to take hold in the United Kingdom.
