It emerged last week that following a vote on the matter which took place late last month, the Law Society's ruling council has decided to delay a decision on splitting the body's representative and regulatory functions until Sir David Clementi delivers his conclusions on the matter at the end of the year.
The proposal upon which the Law Society council voted, which was intended to forestall more drastic measures, would have seen the society's regulatory powers passed on to a board of 20-30 people, around half of whom would be non-lawyers.
However, the council announced that it was minded to consider the option at a later date, and to additionally at that time examine another proposal to hand the representative (rather than regulatory) brief to a newly created body.
According to reports, a special meeting has been scheduled for January 2005 to examine the Law Society's options following the unveiling of the Clementi reform proposals.
