The UK's Law Society is preparing to issue proposals for the separation of its representative and regulatory functions, it emerged this week.
Following a closed door meeting with Sir David Clementi in July, the Society was asked to formulate several models for the separation, to be presented at the next council meeting on September 23.
According to Legal Week, the task has created some division within the industry body, with some members favouring the less disruptive option of creating 'Chinese walls' between the regulatory and representative operations, whilst others believe that a complete split is necessary.
"Chinese walls are an option that the staff would clearly like, because it means that everything would be kept all together and nothing would change," an unnamed council member told the news service, continuing:
"But if we put forward Chinese walls proposals we are likely to have them rejected."
