According to reports, the UK Law Society's International Directorate is in the process of drawing up plans to put foreign firms, institutions, and government bodies that are in need of legal services in touch with law firms in the United Kingdom.
Reporting on Thursday, the Legal Week news service revealed that the proposed venture comes as a result of the Society's recent initiative, which involved the promotion of UK legal services through the business sections of British embassies in various countries, and which drew a very positive response.
In one case this year, Legal Week reported, the Law Society's international head, Alison Hook, was asked to recommend a UK law firm to act on a planned initial public offering for the Nigerian government.
Speaking to the news service, Ms Hook explained that:
'These enquiries for work are, potentially, of great commercial value, so we are going to have to set up an e-mail alert system for UK firms so it is fair to all.'
On Thursday, the Law Society also revealed that, as part of the continuing drive to attract international business for UK law firms: 'Commercial officers from 20 UK embassies around the world are in London this week for an intensive five-day programme to train them to identify opportunities for British lawyers overseas.'
