UK Inland Revenue Should Listen To Taxpayers When Considering Name Change Suggestions

by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

19 July 2001

As part of the Inland Revenue's strategy to metamorphose its public image, the department is considering re-naming itself in a bid to impress the British taxpayer with just how loving and caring it really is. So, you silly taxpayers in the UK, you've got it wrong all along, the Inland Revenue really does care!

Ian Schoolar, Inland Revenue marketing director, has said that the department is discussing changing its name to reflect its new responsibility for paying out money in the form of tax credits as well as collecting it. But the department could pick any one of the suggestions from the British public - who have been sending them in in droves - for free rather than relying on its hugely expensive advertising consultants (to be paid for by the taxpayers anyway).

The BBC News Online service asked its readers for suggestions with the most sensible being: Taxignia, National Tax Office and Communitax.

But of course we are not interested in sensible, we are interested in the most fitting and appropriate suggestions - not to mention the most popular, such as: Inland Revenge, The G&T Bureau (you give, we take), Robin Hood's Bank, Dept. of Stealth and Total Obscurity, CICO (cash in cash out), National Wealth Service and - from a particularly sour taxpayer - Bloodsuckers.
