The UK's Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas has pledged to "get tough" with firms which deliberately flout data protection rules.
According to reports in the UK media, Mr Thomas has been criticised in the past for failing to effectively enforce the Data Protection Act.
The Information Commissioner is said to be seeking additional funds from the government to boost the resources available for enforcement action, and to bring test cases in order to clarify areas of the data protection laws that are currently unclear.
"If there are organisations flouting the rules we will come down on them hard," he announced, continuing: "In cases where there is legal uncertainty, we will issue enforcement notices so they can be considered by the information tribunal."
Mr Thomas also reportedly plans to request powers of audit and inspection with regard to public sector projects, and has put a number of additional proposals for the improvement of the existing Data Protection Act to the government.
