Qualcomm, developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, on Monday revealed that the UK High Court had handed down its judgment in a case filed by Qualcomm against Nokia in May 2006.
The case involved Nokia's GSM/GPRS/EDGE-only handsets and two of Qualcomm's patents that cover certain power saving and power control technologies.
The High Court ruled that, although the Nokia accused products included the patented technologies, the power saving patent is invalid and that the power control patent is partially valid but, insofar as it is valid, is not infringed by Nokia.
Qualcomm revealed that it is actively considering whether to seek permission from the UK court to amend the patents and appeal the decision.
Commenting on the High Court verdict, Nokia's Chief Financial Officer, Rick Simonson stated that:
"We are pleased with the Court's decision that the patent claims are invalid and believe it is consistent with and supported by the facts. This is the second court to conclude that Qualcomm does not have relevant and valid GSM patents."
