In its second annual report, released earlier this month, the UK's Independent Commission for Judicial Appointments criticised the government's plans to establish an independent body to appoint judges.
Arguing that the proposals put forward by the government do not go far enough, the Commission revealed that suitably qualified candidates entering the judicial profession via a non-traditional route are often still put off from applying, despite broad support for the planned independent judicial appointments commission.
According to the Legal Week news service, Commission chairman, Sir Colin Campbell announced that:
"The new body must apply the principles of the best human resources practice and enjoy the confidence of its stakeholders. Our research and the complaints we have dealt with over the past year clearly demonstrate that this is not true of the current system."
