The UK's Transport Secretary, Geoff Hoon, has confirmed that plans to expand Heathrow Airport with a third runway will go ahead.
Announcing the news on January 15, Mr Hoon explained that the expansion will see the construction of a sixth passenger terminal at the airport, in addition to the new runway.
The controversial plans have drawn criticism from the UK's opposition leader, David Cameron, as well as environmental activists.
Much protest was lodged against the idea in its initial stages, when it was revealed that the construction of T6 would result in the demolition of neighboring village, Sipson. Yet Mr Hoon defended the plans, claiming that Heathrow's expansion will create a wealth of jobs and improve Britain's potential as a central hub for business activities.
Chief Executive of BAA Heathrow, Colin Matthews, has welcomed the government's decision to go ahead with the construction plans, commenting:
"This decision opens the door to Heathrow becoming a truly world class hub airport, and to the UK maintaining the direct connections to the rest of the world on which our prosperity depends", whilst admitting that "meeting the environmental targets will be demanding."
The airport's transformation is due to begin in 2015, with completion expected in 2019.
