British families with only one working parent would benefit significantly from greater tax allowances from the government, according to the Christian charity CARE.
The charity made the statement after findings from a report it recently conducted revealed that families with one stay-at-home parent end up being around GBP2,000 a year worse off than families in similar circumstance in other countries, due to the structure of the UK's tax and tax credit systems.
As a consequence, the charity has made a direct request to UK Chancellor Alistair Darling for the introduction of more effective tax reforms for families, particularly the implementation of a transferable personal allowance.
CARE hopes that its findings will encourage the government to re-evaluate tax burdens for families in the UK, in order to bring them more in line with the rest of the developed world.
