The trade body for the UK engineering sector, the Engineering Employers Federation, has warned that the Climate Change Levy will impact on competitiveness, and says that it is imposing a greater burden on manufacturing at a time when the industry is already in recession.
The EEF has claimed that the engineering sector in the UK faces payments of an extra £100 million per year as a result of the new environmental legislation, and in a report published on Monday, demonstrated that between April and June 2001, engineering companies shouldered a disproportionate slice of the levy, paying 17% of the revenue raised, which is more than double the industry's 8% share of the economy.
In its report, the EEF suggested alternative measures which it believes will lessen the burden for the engineering sector, and eventually lead to even greater cuts in emissions. These included ploughing the revenue received so far into increased incentives to invest in energy efficient equipment.
