The UK Customs and Excise Department admitted on Wednesday that it has little idea of the costs for businesses associated with staying compliant with tax laws, following allegations from some MPs that these expenses have significantly worsened.
Facing questions from MPs on the Treasury Select Committee, Chris Tailby, the department's director of tax practice, conceded that compliance costs are “very difficult” to define, due to a number of factors which could affect the amount a firm pays. These can include the type of accounting software used, and the size and nature of the business concerned.
Mr Tailby also admitted that the Customs department has no up-to-date information on tax compliance costs.
"The approach we're taking is to look at specific measures. It's difficult to measure costs themselves," he told the committee.
