UK Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon has unveiled a set of proposals aimed at improving airport standards, which could see the introduction of a new licensing system.
The proposals put forward by Mr Hoon aim to impose tighter regulation on UK airports, and would require all of Britain's largest airports to obtain a license which could later be revoked if standards slip below an acceptable level.
Once implemented, the scheme would give greater powers to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which would be responsible for the three-tier licensing system.
Further to this, the Transport Secretary wants to make it compulsory for all airports in the UK to publicize a breakdown of their environmental impact each year.
According to Hoon, the new measures would improve the quality of services that airports offer their passengers.
So far, several of the UK's largest airports are believed to be backing the move for tougher regulation, although some concern has been expressed over the extent to which the CAA will be involved.
