The Business Software Alliance (BSA) has praised the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its efforts in the sphere of intellectual property (IP) protection, following the announcement by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce that it will be launching an IP rights protection forum.
According to the BSA, the planned forum will allow experts and industry professionals to raise awareness of IP-related matters, combat copyright violations, launch symposia, and assist international organisations and public institutions in combating software piracy.
Speaking to the UAE media, the Economy and Commerce Ministry's undersecretary for Trade Affairs, Sheikh Saud Bin Hamad Al Qassimi explained that:
'This invitation [to the software industry] stems from our deep realisation about the harm that is being caused to the economic sector and end users due to the illegal use of software.'
He went on to add that: 'The ministry believes that the degree of success achieved by a country in its economic progress depends on the efficient implementation of IPR and the use of original software by the industry.'
