The government of the United Arab Emirates is moving to close a loophole whereby UAE-based employers bring expatriate workers into the country to perform a specific job, but then move them to another position.
Speaking to Gulf News, assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Ahmed Kajoor revealed that the initiative, set to come into force on October 1, which will require employment visas to clearly state the job title and salary of foreign workers, "also aims to prevent employers paying the workers less than promised in the employment contract".
He explained that:
"The ministry will allow only up to 10 percent difference between the salary mentioned in the job offer and that mentioned in the employment contract."
Mr Kajoor went on to conclude that:
"The move will eventually lead to the issuing of a single employment visa rather than the existing two: one by the Ministry of Labour and the other by the Interior Ministry. It will protect the rights of both employers and workers and fast-track the issuing of work permits."
