It has been reported that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by the UAE's Ministry of Economy, and the Brand Owners Protection Group for the GCC and Yemen, with the aim of reducing counterfeiting in the region.
Under the terms of the MoU, the BPG has agreed to assist the Ministry of Economy by way of legal and technical training in intellectual property issues, and by providing legal support from a law enforcement point of view.
There will also reportedly be a number of media campaigns highlighting the importance of IP protection, and the potential negative implications of counterfeiting and other infringements.
Commenting on the signature of the agreement, Mohammad Ahmad Bin Abdul Aziz Al Shehi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy told reporters that the MoU would "enhance our position to fight counterfeiting and piracy".
“Fraud, counterfeiting, and piracy combine to form a dangerous phenomenon that supports illegal trade and has a negative impact on both the national economy and public safety,” he was further quoted as explaining.
