It was announced this week that the UAE authorities have approved the new unified GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) States Trademark Law.
According to reports in the regional media, President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued Federal Decree No. 52 approving the legislation earlier this week.
Among other provisions, the new law provides clarification on the definition of trademark-related words and phrases, outlines the conditions necessary for registering trademarks and the procedures to do so, and lays out penalties for trademark infringement.
Mohammad Ahmad Bin Abdul Aziz, undersecretary for the planning sector, UAE Ministry of Economy, reportedly confirmed this week in a statement that:
"During the 27th session of the Supreme Council of the GCC States held in Riyadh in 2006, the law was approved as obligatory legislation for adoption by all GCC states six months after the executive charter of this law was issued."
