Turkey is expected to sign a protocol today extending an existing customs agreement to the ten new EU member states.
Speaking to the EU Observer news service, a spokesman for the Turkish government declined to confirm that the signing would be taking place today, but announced that:
"We are at the moment waiting for the text from the UK presidency. But after we get the text we will sign it."
Subscribing to the agreement has been made a condition of the commencement of Turkey's membership negotiations.
However, the Turkish authorities are expected to include a clarification on the recognition (or otherwise) of Cyprus when it signs the protocol, which could derail the deal if it is considered too tough by the European Commission.
