Trade Union Boss Urges Irish Government To 'Wake Up' To Tax Harmonization

by Jason Gorringe, for LawAndTax-News.com, London

17 March 2004

Speaking at a recent debate hosted by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions, regional secretary of the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU), Mike Jennings urged the Irish government to "wake up" to the realities of EU tax harmonization.

Suggesting that the government is "obsessed" with opposing such a possibility at every turn, Mr Jennings pointed out that although Ireland's low corporate tax rate gives it an edge over some countries, it puts it at a competitive disadvantage with countries levying a zero rate. He went on to observe that:

"The real threat to the Irish economy comes not from the imagined danger of social welfare abuse, but rather from job losses caused by companies relocating to countries - including accession states - with lower rates of corporation tax than Ireland."
