Trade Cooperation Agreement Signed Between Belize And Mexico

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on Cooperation and Trade, intended to encourage the healthy free flow of goods between Belize and Mexico, has been signed.

The agreement was officially signed on Friday, June 5, between the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Belize and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) of Mexico.

Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr Rene Montero signed on behalf of the government of Belize and Victor Villalobos, Coordinator of Foreign Affairs (SAGARPA) signed on behalf of the government of Mexico. The short ceremony took place at Tiger Run Farm Limited, located near mile 63 on the Western Highway.

Both officials declared the signing as historic, since it will boost the export of beef and the exchange of other value-added products between both countries. The commitment will also serve to enhance the bilateral relationship by increased cooperation in various other areas of mutual interest.

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) alongside SAGARPA, the two agencies from both countries responsible for the Health of plants and Animal will coordinate and provide technical assistance as necessary for improved animal health standards for both countries.

Inter-American institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA) and International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) will support the implementation.

Mexican technical personnel were in Belize on June 10 to lay the foundations for on-site technical assistance as may become necessary for the future.
