Three Countries To Be Fined Over Failure To Implement Electronic Copyright Law

24 March 2005

The European Commission announced on Monday that it would be launching infringement proceedings against Belgium, Finland and Sweden over their failure to implement the 2001 Copyright Directive, despite an earlier European Court of Justice ruling against them on this matter.

The legislation aims to provide copyright protection for books, music and films published over the internet, and has been described by the EC as "an essential plank in updating EU copyright law and providing an adequate level of copyright protection for authors and other right-holders in the digital environment".

The Commission went on to add that:

"Moreover, it is the means by which the European Union and its Member States implement the two 1996 World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) "Internet Treaties" which have adapted copyright protection to digital technology. This makes implementation all the more urgent."

The three countries mentioned in the infringement proceedings could face fines over their failure to implement to Copyright Directive.
