Australian Family and Community Services Minister Amanda Vanstone has ordered an urgent inquiry into the Family Tax Benefit system after Labor Party claims that wealthy taxpayers were receiving a family tax break designed for lower and middle income families.
According to figures released by Wayne Swann, opposition spokesman for Family and Community Services, around 18,000 families with an income of more than $100,000 per year are receiving the tax benefit, with fifteen of these said to be millionaires.
Not surprisingly, the revelation has been seized upon by the opposition as a weapon with which to attack the Howard administration, and Swann called the figures "the tip of the iceberg".
"Her and (Prime Minister John) Mr Howard are absolutely committed to this unfair family payments system, which punishes low and middle-income earners who work harder and give largesse to millionaires," alleged the grammatically-challenged politician.
