The Inland Revenue's Hector, the UK's pin-striped cartoon tax inspector who has become the favourite plaything of many media art departments, is now sporting a new, Spider-man persona.
Why Spider-man? Ahem: the Net? Yes? Spider-man Hector, who slithered (scuttered? swung?) into the public view this week, is part of a drive to encourage on-line tax filing.
Spider-man belongs to US group Marvel Comics, and is a highly-valuable property which is licensed to many users around the world. The Revenue is not however paying for Spider-man, on the basis that it's good publicity for the brand. This wouldn't apply to all brands, would it, because not everyone wants to be associated in the public mind with tax collection. Tax-news has been speculating about which character the Inland Revenue should move on to after Spider-man, and we've compiled two lists, one of characters whose value would be enhanced by en-Hectorment, and one of those whose value would be diminished. Here are the first few suggestions:
| Brand Enhancement | Brand Destruction |
| The Terminator | The Jolly Green Giant |
| Clint Eastwood | The Saint |
There's a third, and final category, of MAD = Mutually Assured Destruction, and in this category we are putting Mr Bean.
Tax-news.com is offering a bottle of champagne for the best entry to the MAD category received to mad@lowtax.net by the last day of April. The winner will also receive a free box ad on tax-news.com during the month of May.
