France is the most popular overseas destination for British expatriates to live in the world, according to new research from Halifax International.

The bank's survey showed that 16% of British expatriates are currently residing in France, followed by Spain at 10%. The most popular overseas destination outside of Europe was the USA at 8%, followed by Australia at 4%.

The results show, however, that France tends to appeal to Brits of a certain age, with two-thirds (67%) of those surveyed over the age of 55. One-third were aged between 55 and 64, and one-quarter (24%) were aged 65 to 75. Only 9% of the respondents were aged 30 to 44.

The USA, on the other hand, tends to appeal to a slightly younger age group. Half of the British expats living across the pond were aged between 45 and 64, while 13% were aged between 30 and 44.

"European countries are popular amongst British expatriates living abroad, with France topping the polls, followed by Spain,” noted James Gairdner, marketing and product director at Halifax International.

"Living, working or retiring abroad can mean a whole set of lifestyle changes, including an impact upon your financial affairs. Expatriates have different financial requirements and when moving abroad it is important to have the right products and services in place,” he added.
