The exemption from the 15% excise duty on locally-produced air conditioners of 72,000 BTU/hour or lower should increase the competitiveness of the local industry, result in lower prices and encourage their sales, according to the government.
According to reports, the industry has for some time been seeking a review of the excise duty, due to the increase in imports of cheaper products, particularly from China and Vietnam.
It was also reported that the government’s gross loss of tax revenue from the exemption would be around THB1.6bn (USD47m) per annum, but that there would be a gain in revenue from other taxes.
