Director-general of Thailand's Revenue Department, Suparat Khawatkul, has announced that at least half a million personal taxpayers were added to the country's tax register in the 2001 financial year compared to 440,000 the year before. In addition, 300,000 companies signed-up to the VAT system compared to 270,000 the previous year and the number of newly registered company taxpayers came to 280,000 compared to 236,000 last year.
Mr Suparat said total tax collections for 2001 came to 499.7 billion baht which is 38.5 billion baht up on the total raised in 2000. 'Expanding the tax base remains a key target for fiscal 2002,' he added.
