Tea and coffee could be subject to excise levies if a package of measures aimed at boosting government revenue is brought into effect in Thailand.
According to the country's Deputy Finance Minister, Pruttichai Damrongrat, the Ministry of Finance is considering reforming the taxes levied on a number of products in an attempt to increase annual tax revenues by around THB30bn (USD830m).
Currently, excise taxes on tea and coffee are zero percent. However, if the proposals are approved, this could rise to around 20% for each product.
The MoF does not need parliamentary backing to raise the excise taxes from 0 to 20%, although it may need to seek further approval for its plans to increase the "sin" taxes levied on alcohol and cigarettes.
