Thai Government Approves Tax Increase On Alcohol

The Thai government has approved a plan to increase the excise taxes levied on alcohol by 2%, it has been announced.

The increase will take the alcohol duties from their current 7% up to 9% - a move the government hopes will boost revenues following a decline in tax receipts.

The measure - which took immediate effect on May 7 - raises taxes on beer to THB60 (USD1.7) per litre from THB55 (USD1.5); taxes on white liquor will go up to THB120 (USD3.4) from THB110 (USD3.1) per litre; and excise levies on blended liquor will increase to THB300 (USD8.5) per litre from THB280 (USD8).

According to the country's Finance Minister, Korn Chatikavanij, these increases are expected to generate a further THB70bn (USD2bn) of revenue per year.

The Minister added that the government's reform of the excise tax system will not stop at alcohol, revealing that further plans are being drawn up to revise taxes for fuel and cigarettes, too.
