The Philippine government is considering the possibility of introducing a tax on text messages.
If the plan is approved, the government would spend the extra revenue on bolstering certain areas of the economy, particularly education.
Based on current figures which indicate that around two billion text messages are sent daily in the Philippines, the government estimates that it would be able to obtain around PHP200m (USD4m) in additional revenues per day from the scheme.
The government had abandoned previous attempts to implement such a tax due overwhelming public objection.
