Informed sources close to the local government have indicated that there are strong indications that the Government hope to implement telecommunications liberalisation by the first week of June.
Although the liberalisation of telecommunications has been delayed, and guarantees that it would be introduced since June last year have not been forth coming, it is hoped that the government will push through liberalisation as the industry calls for the government to incorporate the legislation immediately as many companies continue to wait for full liberalisation before putting forward plans which could see major changes in the market.
It has also been indicated that there are signs that various companies have shown an interest in opening broadcasting services in Gibraltar, with at least one party said to be looking at the possibility of taking advantage of the telecommunications liberalisation which should incorporate broadcasting liberisation. It is not known if the government would be willing to introduce broadcasting liberalisation during the first stages, which would open the industry to competition and could lead to more facilities being offered in Gibraltar.
