Côte d'Azur Développement, the economic development agency for the French Riviera, was responsible in 1999 for attracting forty-three companies to the area, who consequently decided to create 1,410 local jobs. Almost sixty percent of the new companies and employment slots were in the information technology arena while nearly forty percent, including a growing number of call centers, were in the services sector.

"Firms from the United States, Germany and France were responsible for creating the most jobs but there were also a significant number of arrivals from Scandinavia and a wave of start ups," according to CAD president Jean-Pierre Mascarelli, noting that the number of jobs created was 26 percent higher than in 1998. "Sophia Antipolis remains the most popular location for most firms but Nice is becoming increasingly important due to the introduction of new office facilities.

Four hundred jobs were added at the rapidly expanding Amadeus Global Travel Distribution, a provider of electronic sales and marketing applications for the travel industry, while Lucent Technologies hired another 150 employees and Germany's Mannesmann employs one hundred people at its research and development center in Sophia Antipolis. New arrivals on the Côte d'Azur last year include Ariane II (Belgium), Arthur Andersen (United States), Avisto (France), European Congress Organization (Europe), Kanbay (United States), LGS (Canada), NewLogic (Austria), Right Vision (France), RTS Networks (Finland), Stonesoft (Finland), Ulticom (United States) and Vivendi (France).
