Tax Freedom Day 2000 falls on 30 May. This means that for 151 days of the year, every penny earned by the average UK resident will be taken to support government expenditures. Note: Tax Freedom Day 2000 appears to fall one day earlier than in 1998 and 1999. But this is because 2000 is a leap year. Despite strong growth and a massive budget surplus, the Chancellor has retained the tax burden unchanged - and set it to rise next year.
