An Austrian arts official has urged the government to adopt a Luxembourg style tax incentive to help promote private investment in film production.
Viennese city councillor for arts, Andreas Mailath-Pokorny has cited the Audiovisual Investment Certificate Programme, pioneered successfully in Luxembourg, as something that the Austrian government should attempt to emulate. The cross-industry initiative would help promote "the cultural importance and economic effectiveness of Austrian filmmaking at home and abroad," Mailath-Pokorny explained.
The arts councillor has proposed a number of measures under his 'Agenda 2006/Strategies for Cinema' package which will be put before the federal government for consideration. It includes tax incentives designed to prevent the flow of capital out of Austria particularly into US backed productions. A similar fate has already befallen the German film industry, warned Mailath-Pokorny.
The official has also suggested raising the amount set aside for film funding in the budget to EUR20 million. An increase last year saw the Austrian Film Institute receive EUR9.6 million from central government.
