Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the main pro-UN settlement party in Northern Cyprus continues his search for political allies after talks broke down with the National Unity Party (UBP) this week.
“The UBP is not serious, they are looking to waste time,” Talat told reporters. “The aim is to miss the May deadline... We will not play their game. We have closed that chapter. We will seek other alternatives,” the Republican Turkish Party leader declared.
Talat was invited to try to form a government by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash last week after recent elections left the main parties with an equal number of seats in parliament. He has been given until the end of next week to find additional support from rival parties, and failure to achieve this will likely result in a second general election later in the year.
