It emerged on Wednesday that the Taiwanese Cabinet has approved a proposal put forward by the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Industrial Development Bureau to exempt third-generation mobile services providers from sales tax for a five-year period.
The planned exemption, which must now go before the Legislative Yuan, is designed to assist the development of the 3G sector, which is still at a comparatively early stage of development in Taiwan.
3G operators on the island will have two years from launching their services to decide when they would like to receive the tax break, and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications expects providers to start taking up the exemption from around 2007.
