A cheque for USD12.5mn was presented on Wednesday to Prime Minister Dean Barrow by the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Ting Joseph Shih.
In presenting the cheque, Ambassador Shih told Prime Minister Barrow:
“To consolidate our common values for democracy and prosperity, as well as our mutual commitments to placing special importance on the necessity of good governance, development, transparency, and efficiency, and further deepening the cooperation relationship between our two countries, I take great pleasure on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to present to your Excellency, a cheque of USD12.5mn as the first instalment of the grant for USD25m to facilitate the budgetary needs of your esteemed Government."
In accepting the cheque, Prime Minister Barrow responded:
“This represents half of the 50 million Belize dollars that the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is providing Belize for its budget preparation. Ambassador Shih was able to work this out with me, very early – about one month after elections – for which we are extremely grateful".
