According to reports in the regional and international media this week, the Taiwanese authorities are currently considering a move to a tonnage tax regime for domestic shipping firms, in order to encourage more of them to fly the territory's flag.
Currently, due to restrictions on entering Mainland ports imposed as a result of Taiwan's stormy relationship with China, many Taiwanese ship-owners prefer to register their vessels elsewhere.
However, the reduction in the tax burden of Taiwanese-registered ships likely to come following a shift from a profit-based to tonnage-based regime may prove enough of an incentive to entice some domestic firms back, and the announcement that such a move is being considered has reportedly been welcomed by the sector.
