It emerged on Sunday that Swiss voters have approved proposals to open the country's borders to workers from new EU member states.
The 56% vote in favour of the extension to the ten new members of the free movement of people bilateral agreement has been welcomed by both the Swiss authorities and the European Commission, as there had been some uncertainty as to the public mood on the matter.
Commenting on the result of the weekend's referendum, Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso observed that:
"This vote demonstrates that Switzerland and the EU work together successfully to promote the integration of our people and our economies and to strengthen the cohesion of Europe."
Swiss President, Samuel Schmid meanwhile stated that the vote was "extremely important, namely for economic growth and the protection of workers".
