During a working visit to Qatar, Switzerland’s President Doris Leuthard met with the Emir of Qatar Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, with Prime Minister Sheik Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani and with Qatar’s Finance Minister Youssef Hussein Kamal, with the talks focusing on bilateral relations, the global financial and economic situation as well as on international matters. The aim of the visit was to strengthen both political and economic ties with Qatar.
According to the Swiss Federal Administration, Switzerland and Qatar maintain excellent bilateral relations. Indeed, the list of bilateral economic agreements between the two countries includes an agreement designed to promote and protect investments as well as an agreement on air traffic. In addition, a free trade agreement between European Free Trade Association member states and members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf was signed in July 2009 and a bilateral double taxation agreement between Switzerland and Qatar was signed in September 2009. Once ratified, these two agreements will swiftly enter into force.
Following the visit to Qatar, Swiss President Leuthard is due to travel to Jordan in a bid to reinvigorate bilateral economic ties between the two countries.
