The Swiss government has announced the launch of a feasibility study into liberalizing trade with China, 10 months after the two governments indicated their interest in signing a Free Trade Agreement.
Discussions on the subject began between the Chinese Commerce Minister, Chen Deming and Swiss Minister of Economic Affairs, Doris Leuthard on November 30.
The two parties agreed that the Feasibility Study would examine opportunities that could arise from reducing tariffs, and areas where investment could be increased, alongside other areas where cooperation could be enhanced. At the conclusion of the joint study group's analysis it will present its findings in a report to the governments, which will form the basis of the agreement's text.
During the course of the meeting, both ministers acknowledged the successful results of the two Workshops on Industrial Exchange, held in Beijing and in Bern earlier in 2009, which were set up to analyse the opportunities and problems with reducing tariffs in various areas.
Swiss direct investment in China currently amounts to almost CHF5bn (USD4.6bn) placing Switzerland fifteenth on the list of China's most important investors.
