03 April 2008

Michael Ambühl, State Secretary of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, paid official working visits to Brazil and Chile from March 31st to April 2nd, 2008.

In Brazil, he held several discussions, including with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Guimarães.

The talks focused on the planned agreement on a strategic partnership, with the goal of strengthening and better structuring cooperation. Mr Ambühl also paid a courtesy visit to Foreign Minister Celso Amorim.

In Chile, Mr Ambühl met Deputy Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren.

The purpose of the meeting was to intensify political cooperation following the state visit to Switzerland by the Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet in June 2007.

Specific discussion items included further improvement of the framework conditions for the Swiss economy in Chile and intensification of scientific cooperation.

Together with the Chilean Finance Minister, Mr Ambühl signed a double taxation agreement on income and wealth taxes.

The agreement largely follows the model agreement drafted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This is in accordance with Swiss practice in the area of double taxation.
