The Swiss Federal Council has appointed Michael Ambühl as the State Secretary for International Financial and Tax Matters in the Federal Department of Finance (FDF).
The Federal Council has also announced the appointment of Alexander Karrer as the Deputy State Secretary.
According to the Federal Council, the newly created State Secretariat in the FDF will serve to reinforce Switzerland's international position in financial and tax matters. Indeed, the State Secretariat will be responsible for the coordination and strategic management of international financial, monetary and tax matters, and will report to the Head of the FDF.
The Federal Council has revealed that the task of the State Secretariat will be to safeguard Switzerland's interests in the International Monetary Fund and in the Financial Stability Board, as well as to actively participate in international efforts to combat financial crime.
The unit will also analyze developments within the financial markets both in Switzerland and abroad, and will further develop legislation concerning the financial sector.
These appointments require the approval of the Finance Delegation of the Federal Assembly, and the appointees are due to assume office on March 1, 2010.
