The Swiss Federal Council has announced the conclusion of an official visit to the United Arab Emirates undertaken by Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz. During the two-day visit, President Merz met President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and conducted official talks into boosting the two countries' economic cooperation.
During the course of the meetings, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates welcomed the positive developments in their excellent bilateral relations. Along with those at the financial and economic levels, these increasingly include the areas of science, research, energy, the environment, culture, justice and politics. At their meeting Merz and Al Nahyan reiterated their readiness to intensify and strengthen their friendly, bilateral relations. In addition the United Arab Emirates announced the opening of an embassy in Switzerland.
Another meeting between President Merz and the Emirate Finance Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank served as an exchange on the measures taken by both countries to combat the global financial and economic crisis and to promote mutual investments. In addition, it was decided to revise the final pending issues to conclude a double taxation agreement in accordance with the OECD Model Convention by the end of the year.
President Merz met with the Vice-President and Prime Minister for other talks along with the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
President Merz also met the Swiss community in the United Arab Emirates at a reception in Dubai and found out about the financial centre strategy of Abu Dhabi and Dubai from high-ranking economic policy representatives and banking representatives.
