It was announced on Wednesday that the Swiss Embassy and the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry are to jointly host a seminar in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, with the intention of promoting investment from the UAE to Switzerland.
According to Francois Barras, the Swiss Ambassador to the UAE, topics covered in the seminar will include real estate, company formation in Switzerland, taxation, and the financial services and resources available to overseas investors in Switzerland.
Figures released for the January- November 2001 period show that the value of UAE imports from Switzerland stood at Dhs 1.68 billion, and exports to Switzerland at Dhs 261.36 million. However, the Swiss authorities are keen to increase capital investment from the oil-rich nations of the United Arab Emirates, and M. Barras announced that despite the tragic events of September 11 and the subsequent economic uncertainty Switzerland still provides a conducive climate for investment.
Speaking earlier this week, the Swiss ambassador revealed that both regions have signed an agreement on the promotion of investment, and that a treaty preventing the double taxation of investors from either jurisdiction is currently under development.
