According to a survey recently conducted by data management firm CDMS, around a third of the UK's leading firms are failing to comply with EU regulations on the sending of unsolicited e-mails.
The firm revealed that it had examined the compliance of 200 top UK companies across various sectors with EU anti-spam rules, and found that many are not asking e-mail recipients beforehand if they want to receive marketing e-mails, only allowing them to opt out after they have received the communication.
Speaking to the BBC's online news service regarding the survey findings, the body in charge of policing the anti-spam regulations, the Information Commissioner's Office, explained that its powers are limited because many of the firms sending spam e-mails are doing so from outside the UK.
However, a spokeswoman told the BBC that offenders registered in the United Kingdom usually respond well following warnings from the ICO, which can impose fines of up to £5,000 on transgressors.
