Many EU web sites are failing to comply with directives on e-commerce, distance selling, and data protection, according to a survey conducted for international law association, World IT Lawyers.
The survey found that 90% of web sites in the European Union include their company name on their site, but that just 12.8% provide information on their place of business, and 24.7% on their trade registrations.
Only 51.2% of the sites surveyed by IWD Market Research on the international law body's behalf, included a privacy policy, and some 60% do not allow users to object to the use of their data for marketing purposes.
The study also revealed that 39.2% of sites contravene rules laid out under the e-commerce directive by not letting customers know whether VAT is included in the purchase price detailed on their web site, and that only 59.3% give any indication of likely delivery costs.
