The House of Lords has backed a motion which aims to prevent tax exiles from making donations to any of the UK's political parties.
The surprise victory saw the amendment to the Political Parties and Elections Bill favoured by 107 to 85.
If fully passed, the amendment will ban all non-UK residents from making donations to political parties.
However, government opposition to the amendment is such that it is unlikely to be passed by the House of Commons.
