Software firm Sun Microsystems announced last week that it has reached a settlement agreement with Eastman Kodak regarding patents allegedly infringed upon by Sun's Java programming language.
Ruling on October 1, a jury at the US District Court for the Western District of New York found that Java had infringed on patents inherited by Kodak when it acquired Wang Laboratories Inc., but no damages had yet been awarded when Sun made its settlement announcement.
Kodak had been seeking a $1.06 billion lump sum, but agreed to accept the $92 million settlement proposed by Sun.
Under the terms of the agreement, the software firm has licensed all Kodak patents needed for use with the development of Java-based products.
Despite finally reaching agreement with Kodak in the long-running patent dispute, however, Sun has stated that it is neither admitting or denying the infringement allegations.
